A UNICEF statement issued on Saturday confirmed that Germany has donated $870,000 to the U.N. Children's Fund for fighting AIDS through prevention programs aimed at youngsters who are out of school in Myanmar.

UNICEF said the funds would be used to teach youngsters aged 10 and 17 prevention methods for HIV. These youngsters would also be taught various other skills. The statement added that the program would operate in 20 townships particularly affected by HIV. Learning opportunities in these townships are few and far between.

Myanmar has about 330,000 people living with HIV/AIDS. The prevalence rate of the disease in the 15-49 age group is 1.2 percent here. Last year Germany had donated $1 million to UNICEF to improve the primary education in the country.
