Doctors belonging to a hospital in Delhi is said to have performed cochlea implant surgery successfully on a one-year-old kid on Thursday. They further claimed that the patient is the youngest to undergo such operation.

The doctors at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said that the girl from Gurgaon was the youngest kid to undergo such an implant in north India so far.

"The child was suffering from 90 percent hearing loss and was not in a position to speak as well. The surgery and subsequent cochlea implantation was successful and we hope she will have a normal hearing level in the near future," said Shalaph Sharma, the doctor who carried out the operation.

The 24-layer middle and inner ear surgery took two and half-hours to be completed.

"Freedom Cochlea implant is the latest technology in this field and we hope by the time the kid is four years, she can hear and speak like any other normal kid," Sharma told IANS.

He said up to one-and-half-year-old kids have gone thorough such processes but the 12-month-old child was the youngest in north India to have this surgery.
