Older Men at High Risk of Developing Diabetes

A new study from University College London has said that men aged over 50 are twice as likely as women to suffer from diabetes, but are unaware of it. The study of more than 6,700 UK adults aged 52 to 79 said that most patients were unaware they had diabetes.

In the study 502 had type 2 diabetes, but 22% of men said they did not know it, while 12% of women also said the same.

"The higher numbers of men with undiagnosed diabetes in this study may be explained by the fact that women go to their GP more often and are therefore screened more often," said lead author Dr Mary Pierce. "There needs to be much greater testing of overweight and obese people as well as those with other risk factors for diabetes."

The details are reported in the journal Diabetic Medicine
