Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Stresses the Importance of Holistic Healthcare

The Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare Shri J P Nadda accentuated the importance of developing a framework for holistic healthcare and wellbeing, rather than merely sick-care, while addressing a conference on Saturday. The Health Minister stated that while there is a challenge of manpower in the healthcare sector and there is a focus on quantity, quality is equally important and should not be lost sight of.

The Health Minister was addressing the All India Medical and Dental Students Conference, at Raipur, Chattisgarh today.

The Health Minister, speaking at the function, stressed on the need for developing clinical skills in the doctors. Better clinical skills are a must for quality healthcare, the Minister pointed out. Due to the pressure of producing more doctors, the clinical skills tend to get ignored. The medical education framework should attend to this critical requirement, the Health Minister emphasized.

The Minister reminded the gathering that in the early days, the family physician was a vital part of the healthcare set-up of the family who knew the health issues and needs of the family and helped in the overall health and well-being of the family members. There is a need to revive that concept again, the Health Minister said in our quest to move from sick-care to holistic well-being.

Shri Nadda appreciated the various innovative initiatives undertaken by the government of Chattisgarh in the health sector. These have provided a social security to the common masses, he stated. Congratulating the medical students for organizing the conference, the Minister said that he was happy that the participants of the conference were medical and dental students. He expressed confidence in the conference providing a platform to them for discussing and deliberating present and critical health issues and furnishing useful solutions to the health issues that the country is facing.
