Thousands of sport enthusiasts took part in the 'Run for Fun' marathon to raise awareness about cancer and blood disorders in children here today.

Organized by the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, the marathon was flagged off by Kiran Walia, Minister for Health and Family Welfare in the Delhi Government.

"This is a very good effort as the incidence of cancer and haemophilia in our country is going up. The children are also suffering from this deadly disease. So, this is a way of raising awareness about the cures and the effects of the disease and it was very important for me to take part in this marathon," said Walia.

Referring to the steps being taken in the field of research and treatment for the cancer and haemophilia in children, Dr. Anupam Sachdev of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said that by organizing this marathon, they want to raise funds for the research in this field.

"The main objective behind this marathon was to raise awareness about childhood cancer and blood disorders. We also want to collect money for the research in this field, as to know what is the percentage of the disease in India, how many patients are suffering from this disease and their line of treatment," said Dr. Sachdev.

In pursuance of their goal to provide complete care to the children suffering from these disorders, the organizers have also been holding picnics, painting competitions, camps, etc. towards looking after their psychological well being.
