Teen Boy With Pencil Embedded in Hand Not Given Appropriate Treatment
A 13-year old boy in South Yorkshire, England, was sent home twice by a hospital even though he was in agony after having a pencil embedded in his hand.
Robbie Appleby-Socket was playing with his friends when a pencil pierced into the back of his right hand. His mother Emma took him to the A&E in Doncaster, South Yorkshire where they were told that he needed an operation that will be performed the next day.

However when they returned the next day, they were once again told that the surgery will be rescheduled and were sent back.

Emma then took Robbie to the Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield where they operated on him immediately and put him on an antibiotic drip in case the wound had become infected. Emma revealed that the staff at Pinderfields could not believe that doctors had sent the boy home after just putting on a bandage. A spokesperson with the Doncaster Royal Infirmary defended their actions, stating that a number of unforeseen and urgent surgeries forced them to reschedule Robbie’s operation.

“Robbie was listed for surgery the next morning and sent home with painkillers to rest and fast overnight in preparation. Unfortunately due to a number of very urgent cases requiring immediate trauma surgery Robbie’s operation was postponed. We apologized and gave him further painkillers and antibiotics”, the spokesperson said.
