Taiwan Health Authorities Report 106 Deaths Due to Dengue Outbreak
Dengue is a mosquito-borne, potentially fatal disease that mainly affects people in tropical and subtropical regions. It causes fever, nausea and muscle and joint aches. A dengue outbreak in Taiwan has claimed a total of 106 lives, while 23,821 have been infected since May 2015.
Official figures reveal that Tainan city recorded 90 deaths and neighboring Kaohsiung saw 14 deaths. Southernmost Pingtung County also reported two deaths due to dengue.

Taiwan's center for disease control suggested that the median age of the dead patients is 77 years, and elderly people with chronic diseases have the highest risk. Latest figures suggest that as of Tuesday, October 13, 2015, 19,621 infectious cases were reported in Tainan and 3,796 in Kaohsiung.

Officials said, "21,260 patients recovered and were dismissed from the hospital till Tuesday." To fight this serious dengue outbreak in years, health authorities have called on residents to step up efforts to make sure their homes are clean and dry.
