'Super Spinach': the Improved Version To Rev Up the Immune System Hitting UK Supermarkets

by Tanya Thomas on Feb 11 2010 8:50 AM

Hitting UK markets today is a new and improved 'super' spinach - specially developed as a rich source of selenium - which can get your body's defence system upbeat.

The green leafy vegetable is enriched with 10 times the amount of selenium found in standard spinach, which prevent damage to cells and tissues.

"It's perfect timing for our customers - at this time of year we need all the help we can get to keep our immune systems healthy to fight off all those bugs," the Daily Express quoted Dr Simon Coupe, fresh produce technologist at the Marks and Spencer, as saying.

Marks and Spencer closely worked with growers in Spain who developed the super spinach by enriching the soil with selenium to create the health-boosting vegetable.

Traces of the super ingredient selenium - believed to boost fertility levels - can also be found in meat, fish and nuts.

It is also rich in magnesium and has been linked to improving memory and brain function.
