A new study by Dr Amanda Stephens in Sydney has found that many people who cause serious head injuries to babies by excessive shaking go scot free. Dr Stephens arrived at this conclusion after examining the cases of some 68 children who were treated for the shaken baby syndrome at the child protection unit at the Children's Hospital at Westmead in Sydney.
These cases occurred between 1997 and 2005. Dr Stephens said more often than not, perpetrators are let off as it is difficult to identify them, "If you don't know who did it and you are not able to sort of make that decision, it can be very hard to decide whether that child should be returned to the family or whether they should be removed," she added.
