Stem Cell Vaccine Promises to Do Away With Immunosuppressive Drugs After Transplantation
A group of American researchers have come up with a new stem cell vaccine to modify the immune system and do away with immunosuppressive drugs used during transplant surgeries.
Researchers from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine tested the injections on a small group of patients undergoing kidney transplants in the United States and found them to successfully trick the body’s immune system into believing that the transplanted organ was originally a part of the body.

“The preliminary results from this ongoing study are exciting and may have a major impact on organ transplantation in the future. With refinement, this approach may prove to be applicable to the majority of patients receiving the full spectrum of solid organ transplants”, lead researcher Joseph Leventhal wrote in the report published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
