Standalone MRI for Brain Scans Being Developed by Mayo Clinic and GE

Mayo Clinic has revealed that it is in collaboration with GE in developing a standalone MRI machine for brain scans. This initiative has received a $6 million grant by the NIH. With brain scans accounting for more than a third of total number of scans conducted in the country, Mayo Clinic said that developing a smaller and cheaper MRI machine dedicated solely for scanning a brain would not only be more cost efficient, but also improve the clinical outcomes.

Describing the advantages of the new product, a statement released by GE said, “Compared to equivalent field strength whole-body MRI scanner, GE’s prototype scanner will be designed to deliver the same (or better) quality images, but from a scanner that is only one-third the size and significantly lighter.”

The statement also said that the prototype would be developed over the next three years after which it would undergo trials at the Mayo Clinic.
