Some Mentally Ill Children Detained in Police Cells

An investigation has found that children as young as eleven were held in police cells last year because officers just presumed they were mentally ill.

The law permits the police to take people who they think are mentally unwell to a safe place for health assessment.

According to reports, one child was detained for more than 24 hours at a police station.

"All services should be working together to minimize the chance that children and young people with a mental illness end up in a police cell," experts said.
