'Smart' Road Crossings for Pedestrians

London is gearing up to introduce a technique called 'Pedestrian SCOOT' which uses video camera technology to automatically detect how many pedestrians are waiting at crossings.

The Pedestrian Split Cycle Offset Optimisation Technique (SCOOT) adjusts traffic signal timings automatically so that pedestrians can cross the road for a longer period of time, said media reports.

New research from University College London (UCL) has found that traffic lights do not provide adequate time for elderly people to cross the road,

The trials of 'Pedestrian SCOOT' are scheduled to take place outside Balham and Tooting Bec underground stations in south west London this summer.

"I am delighted that London is the first city in the world to be (having a trial of) this cutting-edge equipment which would benefit pedestrians across the city," Boris Johnson, mayor of London, was quoted as saying.

SCOOT systems are already used in traffic lights to help control traffic congestion in London as well as other cities around the world.

This would keep London roads safer for everyone to use, Johnson added.
