Slik-Stik Invented For The Elderly

A septuagenarian inventor has unveiled a walking stick that uses elbow grease to power a built-in torch and safety lights.

Brainchild of Trevor Baylis, the pensioner who invented the wind-up radio, the lightweight ‘Slik-Stik’ carries a personal alarm, can collapse to become tiny and has a magnet to solve the tricky issue of how to pick up dropped keys if you are not as flexible as you once were.

Walking Stick Linked to Slowdown in Knee Osteoarthritis Progression
A new study by researchers at the University of Melbourne has revealed that using a cane might reduce the risk of knee osteoarthritis (OA) progression, a common, incurable joint disease,

The stick was the idea of Denise Anstey, 44, from Bristol, who realised there was a gap in the market after she was left with severe mobility problems following a car accident.

"When I was walking I felt very vulnerable, a walking target. I thought it would be good for the elderly to have something they could immediately press to alert people to help,” The Scotsman quoted her, as saying.

"I didn’t want batteries, which are very costly and difficult to change. I found the wind-up technology and didn’t know whether it would be powerful enough to power the stick, fortunately it was. I contacted the company on the Monday, and on the Friday they were in China to get it manufactured,” she added.

The Slik-Stik has won the approval of Baylis.

He said: "It all came on the back of that (radio], which is extraordinary. I never thought it would go as fast as it has."

Baylis was as the EDF Energy Ideal Home Show in London to launch the walking stick.
