Scientists Identify Two Genes Linked to Dementia

by Rajshri on Feb 18 2010 8:01 PM

Scientists have revealed that they have identified two genes linked to fronto-temporal dementia (FTD), which is a devastating neurological condition.

The gene variants for the condition were found on chromosomes 7 and 17 respectively. The scientists arrived at this conclusion after examining 500 people with FTD and comparing their genetic profile with 2,000 normal people.

Dr Susanne Sorensen, head of research for the Alzheimer's Society, said that the development was good news as a gene linked to FTD had already been identified last year. "This is very exciting news as finding out what the proteins produced by these genes do could help us understand the processes that cause the condition, leading us closer to finding a treatment or even a cure," she added.

The details are published in Nature Genetics.
