Scientist Claims to Have Sent Pornographic Emails to Follow NHS Culture

by Rajashri on Aug 26 2009 12:08 AM

Roger Mattock, a senior blood transfusion specialist working for NHS sent porn messages to colleagues and even cracked racist jokes, the Health Professions Council was told today.

Mattock was working at Harrogate and District Foundation NHS Trust in North Yorkshire and resigned his position in October after porn images were found on his computer.

"The scientist's misconduct relates to the receipt, forwarding and retention of inappropriate material of a racist and sexist nature. The public is entitled to expect the highest standard of behaviour from a registered health professional, especially one of Mr Mattock's experience," said Martin Ryder, HPC panel chair. "The panel has therefore concluded that his fitness to practise is impaired."

Mattock admitted to sending and receiving 89 inappropriate emails. However he defended himself by saying he was just following what he saw others do. "I just did what I saw the people doing. I suppose I wanted to fit in. People had sent me these things so I sent them something back. The numbers seemed to go up as the years progressed. Also there was a lot of text messages that went round the department as well," he added.
