School Suspends Five Staff Members After Asthma Death

by Rajshri on Mar 25 2010 9:26 PM

Five staff members of a British school have been suspended after an inquest into the death of an asthmatic boy revealed neglect at both “individual and systematic level”.

11-year old Sam Linton was made to sit outside the class after he complained of having trouble breathing. Precious time was lost as Sam sat in the corridor and though he was later rushed to a hospital, the doctors were unable to save his life.

Last week’s inquest came with a verdict of neglect against Offerton high school with 10 of the 12 failings listed by the jury said to have significantly contributed to Sam’s death.

While Sam’s parents have been campaigning for new measures to prevent such cases, the Stockport council has instead settled for internal management review.

Expressing their disappointment over the latest delay, Linton’s representative Jonathan Betts said, “The council's response to this tragic death has been a lesson in how to create an inexcusable delay in undertaking what was an urgent investigation and instead generate paperwork and reports.”
