Rise Observed in Number of People Smoking Cigars
A new report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that while a greater number of Americans are quitting smoking cigarettes, the number of people choosing to smoke cigars is actually on the rise.
According to the report, the overall number of smoked tobacco products declined by over 27 percent between 2000 and 2011 but the number of non-cigarette smoked tobacco products more than doubled by 123 percent during the same period.

The researchers said that one of the reasons for the huge rise in such products could be the federal excise tax enacted in 2009 which led to lower tax rates for cigars, pipe tobacco and loose tobacco products.

“While consumption patterns of traditional cigarettes have continued to decline, when we take into account these alternative cigarette-like products, we’re seeing a lack of change in the overall consumption of burned tobacco that is being inhaled”, one of the authors of the report, Terry Pechacek said.
