Revolutionary Ice Therapy Saves Life of Baby
This is an account of the miraculous survival of little Freddy Cooke who was born in Dec 2011. His birth was rather eventful because he did not breathe for 20 minutes after birth.
Doctors felt Freddy’s chances of survival was remote and even if he did survive he may have suffered brain damage. They decided to put him in a state of induced hypothermia and he was cooled to 33°C for 12 hours.

This was to avert any further damage to the brain by bringing down his core body temperature and allow the brain to repair itself. They hoped this will enable his brain to make a recovery. Finally, he began crying and moving and doctors could not believe their eyes.

Freddy’s mom, Nicky Symmonds is sure her baby is a Christmas miracle and a gift from the almighty. She will always remember how Freddy had to be defrosted on Christmas Eve before she could hold him for the first time. The baby was indeed saved by ice therapy.

Nicky says: 'When they started warming him up again we still didn’t know if it had worked. When they finally handed me a warm bundle to hold for the first time it felt like a true Christmas miracle that he had survived.'

Freddy is now a perfectly healthy toddler.

Nicky says: 'The doctors could not believe it. He had been deprived of oxygen for 20 minutes. It was unheard of for him to be responding so well. After what I had witnessed when he was born it felt like a true Christmas miracle. It was like he had been brought back to life.'
