A new study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania has found people from the southern states to be the sleepiest of all in the United States.

The researchers used data related to fatigue and sleep disturbance from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and found that the southern states had the most sleep problems. The data included sleeping behaviors of more than 157,000 people across 36 states who took part in the 2006 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

“Sleep disturbance is a major public health concern. However, geographic dispersion of sleep problems, and the factors that may play a role in why some states or regions get better sleep, have been largely unexplored”, lead researcher Michael Grandner said. The study has been published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.
