Researchers Grow Artificial Ear Using 3D Printing Technology

Researchers at Cornell University have managed to grow an artificial ear with the help of 3D printing technology and injections of living cells, giving hope to thousands of children who are born with a congenital deformity known as microtia. Microtia is a condition where the external ear, known as the pinna, is underdeveloped. According to figures, one in every 8,000-10,000 babies born suffers from microtia.

The researchers said that they were able to develop an artificial ear with the help of 3D technology and revealed that within three months, the babies managed to grow cartilage that replaced the collagen used to mold them.

“Kids aren't afraid of it. This is such a win-win for both medicine and basic science, demonstrating what we can achieve when we work together”, co-author of the study, Lawrence Bonassar said.
