Researchers from the University of North Carolina conducted the study on 318 overweight or obese individuals.

The participants were divided into two groups with the first group substituting their high calorie drinks with water while the second group was given diet soda and information regarding healthy choices though they were free to drink whatever they wanted.

At the end of six months, the researchers found that those who drank water or diet soda instead of high calorie beverages had lost up to 5 percent of their body weight. "Substituting non-caloric beverages -- whether it's water, diet soft drinks or something else -- can be a clear and simple change for people who want to lose or maintain weight", lead researcher Deborah Tate said.
