Real-Time Earthquake Detection Network With Mobile Phones
Scientists are exploring avenues to predict earthquakes with the help of mobile phones.
In this regard, it will be good if people carry small devices capable of recording motion and location data.

A new study has suggested the use of Smartphones to develop a real-time urban seismic network with a view to studying earthquakes of high magnitude and predict its occurrence.

The study showed that the accelerometer inside a standard iPhone is capable of detecting a moderate to strong earthquake larger than magnitude 5, especially if it is located close to the epicenter.

According to seismologists, the sensors are improving in their efficiency and accuracy and it may not be long before a network can be created where it will be possible to transmit real-time data to a central location.
