Rare Right Sided Heart Bypass Performed

A rare bypass surgery on a 55-year old man, whose heart was on the right side, a condition known as a mirror image, was claimed to have been performed by a team of doctors led by ”, Dr. R. Ravikumar, Director, Institute of Cardio Vascular Disease at Chettinad Health City, in Chennai.

In a condition also called situs inversus solitaris with dextrocardia, the chambers, valves and major vessels of the patient’s heart were in the reverse position. Dr. Ravikumar said on Saturday, “One among 10,000 persons will have this kind of congenital heart displacement. Performing a coronary artery bypass surgery is technically more demanding on patients who have displacement of heart by intrathoracic structures.”

The patient had three blockages in the heart valves and it took three-and-a-half hours to perform.

He also iterated that the operation was done under Tamil Nadu Government’s Kalaignar Health Insurance Scheme for Life saving treatment.
