Rare Odor-Causing Condition Made Traumatized Brit Woman Consider Suicide
A 34-year old British woman was so traumatized by a rare condition that caused bad odor; she even considered suicide and had to be put on anti-depressants.
Claire Rhodes suffered from a condition known as Trimethylaminuria, also known as fish odor syndrome, in which the body is unable to break down trimethylamine obtained from food products such as milk and eggs. Since it is not broken down, trimethylamine continues to build up in her body and is released out through urine, sweat and breath, giving out a strong fish odor.

When she was first told by her friends about the fish odor, she started taking 10 showers a day and even lied to her dentist to remove a few teeth since she believed it was due to bad breath. She revealed that she even thought about suicide and had to go into counseling.

After watching a TV program about another woman with the fish odor syndrome, Claire finally changed her diet which includes eating just strawberries, carrots, potatoes and salad. “You’re supposed to have other things in small amounts but they still make me stink. So I only eat fruit and vegetables. It’s made me lose six stone (38 kg). The diet does get me down but I have got to stick to it. I wouldn’t be able to go out if I didn’t. I’d be too embarrassed”, she said.
