As environmental issues like global warming taken the centre stage, the Punjab University students have taken a lead to implement environment protection projects.

The students have made a documentary film to make the masses aware about global warming.

“We will be setting presentations all around the university. We plan to go to different colleges. We plan to invite the people from different colleges to the University. We also plan to make posters and organise meetings at the students’ centre,” said Nitin Jindal, a student of the University.

It’s a small opening but grassroots efforts make big changes.

Astha Arora, another student, added: “We are trying to create awareness among youngsters so that they use dust-bins. We need to inculcate the habit of using dustbins. We are trying to spread this message so that people change.”

Beside, awareness drives and schemes, the University has suggested to its students to ride bicycles.

The warning against global warming has been sounded by student members of `Sankalp’ or determination, as the International Year of Planet Earth is a 2008 international observance, declared by the 60th United Nations General Assembly.

It’s the biggest ever international effort to promote the Earth Sciences.

It is a fact that man-made pollution has ‘contributed substantially’ to global warming.

“Men are not the cause of global warming. They are speeding up global warming. It is possible to reverse that speeding up by joint effort and spreading awareness,” said Arun Ahluwalia, Member, Outreach Programme, International Year of Planet Earth.

The average global temperature which is 0.5 degree Celsius warmer than it was a century ago could probably be one degree Celsius warmer by 2025 and three degrees Celsius warmer by 2100.
