by Savitha C Muppala on Aug 1 2008 4:22 PM

To check if medical colleges in the city are complying with laid out norms, an inspection team from The Medical Council of India (MCI) is due to visit the medical colleges in the city today.

The inspection will also check the veracity of allegations about medical colleges, mainly their manner of handling vacancies of staff in the colleges.

The allegation points a finger at medical colleges in the state, that teachers are being borrowed from other colleges to cover vacancies, especially during such inspections.

According to one such allegation, a reputed college had even borrowed eight teachers at the Professor, Assistant professor level from another medical college in Maharashtra. According to one professor, this is the normal practice of the state government to temporarily shift teachers to colleges where there is a shortage of staff, for a short time till the inspection is completed.

Vasudevrao Tayade, director of department of medical education and research (DMER) confirmed he was unaware of such practices, he said, "As per the orders of the state minister for medical education Dilip Walse-Patil, all the vacant posts comprising technical and non-technical staff of all the medical colleges across the state would be duly filled in the next six months."
