Psychotherapy Proves Beneficial in the Long Run

by Rajashri on Oct 1 2008 2:22 PM

A new report has said that long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (LTPP) is better than short-term treatment in order to treat complex mental illnesses like personality disorders.

The study reviewed 23 previous studies involving 1,053 patients treated with long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy, which lasted for about 12 months.

The study found that patients who completed LTTP were better off than 96% of patients in control groups. "In this meta-analysis, LTPP was significantly superior to shorter-term methods of psychotherapy with regard to overall outcome, target problems, and personality functioning," the authors wrote.

The details of the study are published in The Journal of the American Medical Association.
