The district administration is due to introduce a project in city schools to prevent childhood obesity, district collector M Beena announced during a press conference held in the city.

This campaign will be the combined effort of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), the Rotary Club and the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IMP).

During the meeting, district collector said, "If we prevent obesity in childhood, we could avert many health problems. According to the studies, obesity in children causes cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pleasure. But we do not have any programmes for checking obesity. As part of the project, we will conduct various programmes in all schools in the district”

Awareness campaigns will comprise visual programmes, discussions, lectures and compact discs containing the significance of preventing obesity in children. Nearly 1 lakh of rupees has been budgeted for this project.
