A new study conducted by researchers at Iowa State and Cornell University has found that pouring small measures of alcohol in your glass can help prevent you from drinking too much.
The researchers revealed that pouring just half a glass of alcohol, i.e stopping when it is two fingers from the top of the glass, will ensure that you do not overindulge in your drinking habit.
The researchers said that those who followed this standard practice tended to drink 20 percent less compared to those who poured without measuring. The study, published in the International Journal of Drug Policy, was conducted on a group of 74 college students and staff with the researchers finding that men tended to pour more compared to women.
"About 70 percent of the people in the sample used the half-glass rule, and they poured significantly less by about 20 per cent. It's a big difference. We would suggest using a rule of thumb with pouring because it makes a big difference in how much people pour and prevents them from overdrinking", lead researcher Laura Smarandescu said.
