Physician Shortage Spells Trouble for South Cumberland Community Care Centre

by Savitha C Muppala on Jul 3 2008 3:53 PM

Shortage of doctors in Cumberland County, N.S., is threatening to impact The South Cumberland Community Care Centre in Parrsboro. The centre has planned to shut down its emergency department in July for want of doctors to run this facility.

To compensate for the unavoidable closure, a clinic for outpatients will be made operable during the period.

This is only a short term decision till more doctors are inducted into the team. The CEO of the Cumberland Health Authority has confirmed that recruitment drive is on for part time doctors who can help the hospital tide over this shortage.

North Cumberland Memorial Hospital in Pugwash is also in the same boat, with its emergency department in doldrums due to acute physician shortage.
