People Missing Work Due to High Stress Levels
More and more people in Britain are missing work due to higher stress levels with the problem more apparent in the public sector compared to private sector, a new survey reveals.
According to the research conducted by Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, people working in public sector call in sick 9.6 days, three more than their private sector counterparts.

More than three fourths of those who were questioned admitted that stress was one of the major reasons for missing work with the institute stating that the ongoing recession was the major cause for high stress levels among public sector workers.

“Compared with the private sector, more public sector employees are in challenging public facing roles such as social work, policing, teaching and nursing where they often have to deal with people in difficult and emotionally charged situations”, the institute’s Dr Jill Miller said.
