Oz Doctor Accused of Cutting Off Genitals Sentenced to Jail

An Australian doctor accused of cutting the genitals of a woman was handed a three and a half year jail sentence but the victim said that the punishment was not enough.

Graeme Reeves, 60, was sentenced by New South Wales District Court Judge Greg Woods to a maximum of three and a half year jail term and the Bega doctor will spend a minimum of two years behind bars. However the victim, Carolyn DeWaegeneire was unhappy with the length of the punishment and said that had it been a man who had been mutilated, the judge would have given a harsher punishment.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Ms DeWaegeneire said, “Until now I thought the law was to protect the public and the people. I have now learnt otherwise. I was hoping that a woman would be treated equal to a man.”

The length of the punishment was also slammed by Medical Error Action Group head Lorraine Long who helped expose the case. Ms Long said that she had expected the judge to announce a sentence of at least seven years and added that the judge fell into the trap of the “depression card” played by Reeves who claimed that he was clinically depressed and feeling impotent.
