The report underlines the fact that large section women in India continue to assert their social independence with more than 47 percent of women between 20 and 24 years of age being married before they turn 18 years of age while 22 percent become mothers before they enter adulthood.

Around 8 percent of females between 15 and 19 years of age had sex before they turn 15 compared to less than 3 percent of boys.

More worryingly, the report reveals that more than 57 percent of men and 53 percent of females between 15 and 19 years of age thought that it was justified for a husband to beat his wife.
