Over 5,000 Savor Free Lunch Made of Fruit and Veg Rejected by Supermarkets in London

More than 5,000 people of the London public ate free lunch at the Trafalgar Square composed of hot curry, apple juice and an array of fresh groceries with activists emphasizing wastage of food by supermarkets. The lunch was made up of vegetables and fruits that would have been otherwise binned after the supermarkets rejected them as they failed to meet their strict cosmetic standards. All of the vegetables and fruits were fresh but came in different “wonky” shapes that did not find a place on the supermarket shelves.

Over 300 volunteers took part in the event, washing, peeling, chopping, cooking and serving the delicious curry. A number of charity organizations participated in the event with the mayor of London, Boris Johnson serving the first bowl of curry.

“Throwing away mountains of perfectly edible food is crazy at a time when all Londoners are feeling the pinch. I want to do all I can to help people to cut waste, save cash by doing so and improve our great city”, Mayor Johnson said.
