Figures from the General Medical Council show that 1,356 doctors have been assessed for alcohol and drug addiction or mental health problems over the same period, the Daily Express reported.

As many as 544 doctors were found to have drinking problems and 598 were diagnosed with mental health issues.

Experts said this was likely to be the tip of an iceberg because most such doctors do not seek help.

Clare Gerada of the Royal College of General Practitioners, who runs a help service for sick doctors, said: "Many are exhausted and under tremendous pressure."
