Orissa Woman Suffering from Heart Issues Wants Permission for Euthanasia
A 38-year old woman in Orissa suffering from major heart problems has requested permission to undergo euthanasia as her family cannot afford to pay for her expensive treatments.
Jhunu Behera from Ganjam district has sent a letter to both the President of India and to the Orissa Governor asking them to agree to her request for euthanasia. Jhunu is suffering from a heart ailment that requires surgery to get her heart valves replaced.

Her brother Abhiram Pradhan said that the surgery requires at least Rs 5 lakh, an amount that her husband, who is a daily laborer, cannot arrange. The eldest of Jhunu’s four children, a 15-year old son has already dropped out of school to work as a daily laborer in order to help the family meet its basic needs.

“I have had to mortgage the house to pay for her treatment so far. I have no other resources left to continue her treatment. She is suffering severe pains. Instead of continuing to live in this condition, she wants to die”, her husband, Surendra Behera said.
