New figures have revealed that one-in-ten women become victims of domestic violence every year in Britain.

Human rights watchdogs found the scale of wife beating to be extremely shocking. They want a huge increase in help for such victims.

According to the report, 3 million women every year were assaulted by husbands, partners or boyfriends.

"There is a burgeoning crisis of violence against women which as a society we need to address," Mirror quoted Trevor Phillips, commission chairman, as saying.

The report by the Commission for Equality and Human Rights was released to coincide with actress Nicole Kidman saying that a lot needs to be done internationally to end violence against women.

According to her, it was an "invisible pandemic". Later this week, ministers are expected to announce new measures to control the problem.

It was also revealed that this week men who kill their partners are to lose the right to claim they were provoked.
