Obesity Linked to Increased Risk of Dementia
While it is general knowledge that being obese could lead to a number of health problems including diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, a new study published in the journal Neurology has found that obesity can also affect mental performance and increase risk of dementia.
The 10-year long study included more than 6,000 British adults between 35 and 55 years of age with around 31 percent of the participants suffering from metabolic abnormalities such a diabetes and high blood pressure.

The researchers found that those who were obese and suffered from metabolic abnormalities displayed a faster decline in their cognitive abilities with their mental scores declining by 22.5 percent compared to those who were fit and healthy.

“More research is needed to look at the effects of genetic factors and also to take into account how long people have been obese and how long they have had these metabolic risk factors and also to look at cognitive test scores spanning adulthood to give us a better understanding of the link between obesity and cognitive function, such as thinking, reasoning and memory”, the researchers wrote in their report.
