No Heart Risk from ADHD Drugs, Says Study

A new study published in the journal Pediatrics suggests that children who take ADHD drugs such as Adderall, Ritalin and Strattera are not at a risk of suffering from heart attacks.

A number of cases involving ADHD kids suffering from heart attacks have increased fears that the drugs could be dangerous for kids and many drugs carry out a warning message regarding risks of heart complications.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurobiological disorder that affects normal behavior and impairs the ability to concentrate.

Researchers from University of Pennsylvania used data of more than 240,000 kids between three to 17 years of age, all of whom took ADHD drugs, and compared them with over 965,000 kids who did not take the drugs.

After 135 days, the researchers found that the risk of heart problems among children who took the drugs was no larger than among those who did not take the ADHD drugs.

“The risk of death is certainly no higher in children who take ADHD medications than in children who don't. For kids who would benefit from ADHD medications, the potential cardiovascular risks should not dissuade physicians from prescribing the drugs”, lead researcher Sean Hennessy said.
