NIMHANS Firing: Commandos Fire at 22-Year-Old Undertrial,
A 22-year-old criminal, who had been taken for a psychiatric evaluation to the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience (NIMHANS) here on Sunday evening has been neutralized, after he snatched a rifle from a policeman and started firing indiscriminately.
Police Commissioner N. S. Megharik said, "There was one undertrial prisoner called Vishwanath, who was brought to Parappana Agrahara Central Prison to NIMHANS for treatment. He was there in the prison for last three years. At around 3 o'clock, on pretext of using the bathroom, his handcuffs were removed. When he came out he snatched the rifle from a policeman. He started firing in the ward itself. Hospital and police staff tried to overpower him, but could not. Then, patients and our people came out and locked him inside. After 10 minutes, he started firing in the ward. So, we evacuated the area. All his movements were regulated through the CCTV. He was counseled by the doctors but he did not respond to that. After that we wanted the commandos to come. He was neutralized and is now taken to the hospital. Commandos fire on the vital organs only."
