Expectant mothers in England will be paid an amount of money to spend on mid wives, water births and alternative therapies.
NHS Personal Maternity Care Budget worth at least Ģ3,000 will be offered to all pregnant women in the country. England has a high rate of stillbirths and many maternal facilities are considered to be unsafe for childbirth.
‘Pregnant women will be given a Ģ3,000 NHS budget to choose where and how to give birth as most of the maternity facilities are poorly maintained in England.
A National Maternity Review highlighted issues on maternal services and the huge amount of money spent by the government on clinical negligence cases relating to maternity care.
Therefore, the government has now announced that the personalized budget can be utilized for NHS-accredited services like,
- Private midwifery services during pregnancy and labor
- Home birth
- Water births
Simon Stevens, NHS chief executive, said the new budgets system, which will first be piloted in four parts of the country, would ensure the "money follows the mum" and drives up quality.
