Nearly 17% of Global Population at Risk of Suffering Strokes
New figures released by the European Society of Cardiology suggest that nearly 17 percent of the global population will suffer a stroke some time in their lives with a death occurring every six seconds.
The figures were released to mark World Stroke Day on October 29. While the number of stroke cases is expected to soar, researchers revealed that a large majority of the cases are preventable.

More than 85 percent of the cases can be prevented by making changes to the lifestyle and dietary habits such as eating fresh food, avoiding alcohol and being physically active.

Stating that people should take the risk of stroke more seriously, European Society of Cardiology’s Professor Freek Verheugt said, “All individuals with irregular heart beat should see a doctor, who can diagnose whether this heart rhythm disorder is likely to lead to stroke. If so, blood-thinning medication can reduce the risk of stroke by up to 70 percent.”
