Natural Sweetener Found in Chewing Gum Could Help Combat Ear Infections
A new study conducted by researchers from the University of Toronto found that the natural sweetener xylitol could be used in treating ear infections.
Xylitol is a popular ingredient used in mints, gums and lozenges and is known to have anti-bacterial properties.

The researchers analyzed data from the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or quasi-RCTs involving children under 12 years of age.

The study checked the effectiveness of xylitol supplementation in treating acute otitis media or painful ear infection against placebo or no treatment and found that those who took xylitol supplement had a 25 percent lower risk of developing the painful infection compared to the other two groups.

The details are available in the latest issue of The Cochrane Library.
