Movies Make Brains Think Similarly: Study

Researchers from Aalto University in Finland have revealed that movies can unite brains, which means that when watching a movie, human brains respond in a way similar to other viewers’ brains. The researchers found that the brain developed similar patterns among all viewers, even at the time scale of fractions of seconds.

“Despite the apparent complexity of movies, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has revealed notable synchronisation of brain activity between different spectators,” said researcher Kaisu Lankinen.

The researchers used the method of magnetoencephalography (MEG) which can detect the fast brain processes. With this new method, investigation of faster brain processes can be done. At present, in neuroscience research, checkerboard patterns or single images have been used.

The results of the finding were published in journal ‘NeuroImage’. The study says that while watching a movie if one person is feeling sad or angry or depressed then he is not alone, other viewers also have the same kind of feeling and emotions.

Thus, the findings said that there were similarities between brain signals of varied people while watching movie.
