Mother of Teen Who Committed Suicide Blames “Toxic” Digital World for Her Death
The mother of a 15-year old girl in London, who committed suicide by throwing herself under a train, blamed the ‘toxic digital world’ for taking her life.
An inquest into the death of Tallulah Wilson heard that the 15-year old girl had a secret online life, where she uploaded pictures of her injuries on blogging site Tumblr. Her mother Sarah Wilson said that Tallulah created a fantasy person who took cocaine and drank.

When Mrs Wilson asked her daughter why she could not be herself on the internet, she said that more than 18,000 people liked her for what she was on the net. Mrs Wilson closed down her Tumblr account but 24 hours later Tallulah took her own life by throwing herself front of a moving train at St Pancras station in October 2012.

Urging social media websites to take a more active role in policing and for big brands to withdraw advertising from websites that host inappropriate content, Mrs Wilson said, “I believe the likes of Tumblr should do more to protect other vulnerable young people from the insidious aspects of the internet; they need to take an active role in policing and swiftly removing unsuitable material as some sites already do. I appeal to big brands to withdraw their advertising from those sites who continue to host inappropriate self-harming and suicide-promoting blogs to stop this poison spreading”.
