Money Woes are Wrecking Family Life, Say 3 in 4 Parents

Family life is being devastated by the financial squeeze and job insecurity, says a new survey conducted in the UK.

More than half of parents believe their home is in 'crisis' while three out of four feel that stress is undermining their family's happiness.

Depression is one of the most common mental disorders affecting approximately 340 million people in the world. No one is immune from depression - it occurs in people of all social classes, all countries and all cultural settings.

The study of more than 2,000 parents of children under 18 showed a grim picture of the state of the nation's households, and many of the problems are put down to the lack of money.

By far the biggest reason given for problems at home is financial pressure (67 per cent) with the damage caused by the credit crunch and recession clearly taking a heavy toll on the family.

Long working hours were cited by 37 per cent of those questioned as being a cause of trouble at home, while one in four were under stress from the fear of losing their job.

Further almost one third of parents blamed children 'asking for unaffordable things'.

The survey was commissioned by the Family and Parenting Institute, which launched its Parents' Week campaign earlier this week aimed at highlighting the pressures families are facing.

"It's alarming that so many parents feel that family life is in crisis, and it's a timely wake-up call for the Government," the Daily Mail quoted Dr Katherine Rake, chief executive of the institute, as saying.The financial pressures are such that people are feeling extraordinary levels of anxiety and, as always, the family is the first shock absorber in difficult times," he added.
