MHRA Revises Child Doses of Paracetmol

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has called for a revision of child doses of paracetamol following concerns that 1 in 4 youngsters are regularly overdosing on the painkiller putting them at risk of liver damage. Parents often give their children medicines containing paracetamol at home before going to the doctor.

The information displayed on the labels of the medicines is also being updated to ensure children get the most optimal dose of paracetamol suitable for their weight. Currently there is one age band for those aged 6-12 years but this will now be split into three bands- 5ml for those aged 6-8years, 7.5ml for those aged 8-10years and 10ml for those aged 10-12years. The current two age bands for babies 3 months-1 year and 1-5years will be upgraded to four categories giving more accurate and targeted doses.
