Metal Waste Released by Nanodiamonds can Prevent Inflammation in Joints
Researchers from the University of Alabama have found that the metal waste released by nanodiamonds used in reinforcing synthetic joints can also prevent inflammation in the joints.
In the study, published in the journal Acta Biomaterialia, the researchers studied the interaction between nanodiamonds and macrophages, the scavenging cells present in our body which react with the debris particle released by metal joints.

The researchers found that the debris released by nanodiamonds should not cause any pain or inflammation in the joints though they were quick to point out that more research is needed in order to determine whether a buildup of the metal particles is safe.

“Our results add to the early evidence that nanodiamonds are indeed nontoxic in living cells. The next step will be to conduct experiments to confirm where nanodiamond particles of varying sizes and concentrations end up, and if buildup at those destinations is safe”, the researchers wrote in their study.
