The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an alert on mercury dental fillings last month. However British regulators seem to have taken no notice of this alert even though patients in Britain have about eight million mercury fillings a year.
The Department of Health in the UK has said the volume of mercury fillings in England and Wales had decreased by 15 percent in 2004-05 "These fillings are a safe, durable and affordable cavity choice for dental patients that do not pose a health risk," a spokesman said.Many campaigners are not satisfied blaming these fillings on a variety of ailments including fatigue, depression heart conditions and Alzheimer's disease.
The FDA seems to admit that there are problems saying, "Dental amalgams contain mercury, which may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and foetuses."
Currently Norway and Denmark have outlawed mercury fillings, while Japan and Finland have strict regulations in place.
